ASIC Online Keys (not just one key!)
ASIC uses different keys depending on the service:
- ASIC Key (11 digits): Links your business name or AFS licence to ASIC Connect
- Corporate Key (8 digits): Used by directors/agents to update company details or lodge documents
- Invitation Key (32 characters): Temporary key (48 hours) to invite a third party into the ASIC Regulatory Portal
- Security Key (7 digits): For connecting an entity to the Regulatory Portal (e.g. for industry funding returns).
These keys are like passwords. Keep them safe and only use the right one for the right job.
Director IDs & Consent
Every Company Director in Australia must have a Director ID. It is a unique 15-digit identifier that stays with you for life, no matter how many companies you’re involved in. You need it before you can be legally appointed as a Director.
On top of this, ASIC requires written, informed consent before anyone is appointed as a Director or Secretary. Why? Because individuals have been appointed without their knowledge in the past leaving them personally liable for company actions they never agreed to.
The Takeaway
Make sure all directors have applied for and hold a valid Director ID. Always get signed consent before lodging appointments. These safeguards protect individuals and keep company governance transparent.
